The Old Covered Bridge

The old covered bridge stands serene,
The prettiest bridge you ever have seen.

Echoing sounds of by-gone hooves
wagon wheels that rattle the roofs.

That long long bridge is like life itself,
we enter and exit in absolute stealth.

We came here naked, go out the same.
To be born and go through life's troublesome lanes.

How I wish, how I wish that bridge could talk to
tell of old lovers and horses that balk.

To tell of a young swain's view
as he sees a well-turned ankle or a button up shoe.

That bridge is a memory of bygone days.
Before the roar of the huge car craze.

They faze not or hurt not the time tested span
